So here is the desk...hubby had it before we were married 25 years ago...for the longest time it was what we kept the cat food on so the dog wouldn't eat it...and since we moved into this house, it has held my sewing machine...but it is red stained, and it totally needed a color change. Chalk paint...black and cream....would have painted the whole thing black, but was concerned about sewing on a black top, might be hard to see...I don't know...

When knobs are on sale at Hobby Lobby, we usually pick up some that we like, and I found a set of these in the knob box...yes, we have a box for knobs....lol
Here is the finished desk...I opted to seal the chalk paint with 2 coats of acrylic polyurenthane, just so the paint wouldn't chip. I love the clean, fresh look it has now...so much better in this space than before.

Scrapping Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00942441570601897824noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7437387456974085976.post-20011756349779988552014-02-05T14:30:00.000-08:002014-02-05T14:30:07.637-08:00Chalk Paint AttemptBeen wanting to try chalk paint out for a while now. Of course, here in southern Ontario, no one sells Annie Sloans Chalk paint, so I decided to try making my own. After searching online, I decided to try the paint, water and plaster of paris recipe . ( 1 1/2 cups latex paint, 1/2 cup warm water, 1/2 cup plaster of paris...mix the water and p of p, and stir into paint)It was easy enough to make and I loved how it covered the old armoire without any sanding or prep work. It felt all chalky when dry on my piece.

So here is the said armoire. We picked it up at a yard sale a few years ago, without really anywhere to use it. I didn't even like it. But then we moved to our new old house, and Im sure you know what the closet space is like in older homes...so I graciously told hubby he could have the only closet in our room, and this armoire would be for my stuff. I know what you are thinking....how could you possibly fit a women's wardrobe in this...but I did...anyhow, it is ugly...plain jane....so it was time for a makeover

Here is the new color scheme...cream left over from basement painting, and light turquoise from my son's room...one coat done!

Two coats...now, I painted this sloppily,,,every which way, and with lots of paint in some places and not so much in others...watch this video for some help with the hows...

Here you can see the somewhat sloppy way I painted

Then once the two coats were done, I stenciled with a dollar store stencil...yup, you read correctly...

Now came the work. Since we don't have the Annie Sloan products, I bought a paste wax at the local hardware, found it in the cleaning section...they said it was for polishing wood floors...oooook...and I bought some Minwax dark finishing wax. Both products were a lot more solid than what the Annie Sloan seems to be in the above video...but they worked fine. I sanded some edges to get that distressed look. Firstly, I rubbed the clear wax over an area and then rubbed it off, somewhat, and repeated with the dark wax, until I got the desired effect, and finished with the clear wax. It was not as easy for me as it looked in the video, but then I wasn't using the same products.

Below is the finished piece, and although it didnt turn out 100% like I thought it would, I am mostly happy with it. It is a little blotchy, but it looks a lot better than it did. Added some decore on top and lets call it another finished project!!!
I love Christmas...and this year has really been perfect so far...shopping done early, everything decorated...cards made and sent...presents wrapped and under the tree...and all the baking is done. Its wonderful to have such a relaxed December...being off work has afforded me the pleasure of getting everything done without any stress or time constraints. Just wanted to share my decore for the holidays!

Below is my little village...hubby got most of them on sale on Black Friday many years ago, and since then, we have found a couple at yard sales, and some damaged ones cheap, that of course, were easily fixed.

This is my "junky" centerpiece. We bought the box (along with about 10 others) from a local guy who had been collecting them for years and finally decided to get rid of them all. Its long and skinny, and even though dh didn't like the box when he first saw it, he now says he's glad "he" bought it, as it fits our long dining room table so well. The apothecary jars...one on the left purchased at St Vincent de Paul for $3.00, the middle one is actually a trifle dish and the last one dh bought at a yard sale. Greenery was cut from some local trees that had been taken down and left in a pile to be removed.
Ahhhhhh...my fireplace. Always wanted a fireplace just so I could decorate it for Christmas...dh put an old barn board on top for some extra width and I kinda like it there. The jars were all made from dollar store glassware...jars and upside down dessert or candle holder...I'm just too cheap to pay for actual apothecary jars.
Made new stockings this year...had some fabric left over from my new tree skirt, so I thought I might as well make stockings to co-ordinate with my color scheme
And finally my tree, all fancied up with its new skirt...my colors are chocolate, green and cream...with a large focus on birds. I love it...it makes me happy :)

Scrapping Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00942441570601897824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7437387456974085976.post-64067466546728906952013-11-19T18:30:00.000-08:002013-11-23T13:48:36.420-08:00Ruffled Tree SkirtI saw this ruffled tree skirt a few years ago, and fell in love, but I had just made a new tree skirt to match my new Christmas color scheme...which is green, chocolate and cream. So....then we decide to move...and our new home has higher ceilings than our last house....and my tree looks a little dwarfed. I know, I should just buy a new tree, but I can't seem to find one that is not pre-lit...and really...hundreds of dollars for 1 more foot of height, seems silly. I have a really good quality tree now, so the plan is to put the tree on a box...stay with me now...I'm getting to the point...my tree skirt however, is not large enough to cover the box and down onto the floor....so...yay...I get to make the tree skirt I wanted...the ruffled tree skirt. I already had some cream linen, I think it was an old tablecloth...and I've never used it, so time to repurpose it. I headed to the fabric store for some chocolate fabric...lucky for me, they were having a sale, buy 1 meter get 2 free. So for 14.00 I walked away with 3 meters of chocolate brown fabric. Do not underestimate how much you need...I didn't use all the fabric I bought, but had enough to make 4 new stockings as well, but thats it.

Started out with a pattern...I used some wrapping paper to cut the shape, or half the shape of the skirt, and although I didn't take a pic...I did cut half a hole in the middle of the long straight edge, which will go around the tree trunk. Size will be determined by what you need...I measured with the box and tree stand, and I needed more than four, not quite 5' in diameter...so I think I settled on 56"

I used an old sheet for the base...I mean, what are you going to do with a sheet that doesn't match your bedroom decor anyway???

Then I cut the linen and the chocolate...3" strips...the longer the better. I also decided to zig zag what would be the exposed edge of each strip. I was concerned about fraying over time, so I figured I might as well take care of that issue.

Starting on the outermost edge, I began hot gluing the strips (after running to the store to purchase a new hot glue gun, as my 20 year old one decided it didn't have another project in it), pinching as I went along. Only a couple of burns...after which I usually exclaim "HOT glue"

When I came to the end of a strip, but not the end of the row, I put some glue down on the previous strip edge, and put the next strip right side to right side of strip already down and glued...so it looks like another pinch

Ever since I found Pinterest, I have been wanting to make this project...the Rag Rug, or some posts call them T-Shirt Rugs...I wanted a little one for my main floor 2 piece bath, which has really cold floors in the winter. I had been looking for some rug hooking material all summer, and then last week had a brainstorm after purchasing some anti-slip material for some other rugs...I thought to myself, "well, that looks just like rug hook material" I purchased it at the dollar store and still had a large enough piece to work with. So, my intention was to do a large band of white with the rest being chocolate. I proceeded to mark out the band where the white would go with a marker right on the grip mat. As you can see, the middle would be chocolate, and the outside edge right to the end of the grip mat and the "framed" part would all be white...that WAS the plan...
I had an old white t-shirt I purchased at a thrift store for the project...and began to cut it up...strips about 3/4" wide x 3" long...lots of cutting...used every bit of the shirt up, the body, and the sleeves

I had seen on another post, to pull the strips so they curl, but I don't think it is necessary, as they end up looking more like tubes instead of fabric scraps...but I had already done it...so ya gotta stay flexible when crafting.

I began by doing every "stitch" along the inner line with the white, and I tied each one as I went, cause I figured I will want to wash it and I didn't want it to come apart. It became very clear at this point, what I thought was a huge amount of white strips was not going to go very far...so being flexible again, I opted for the one row of white as shown.

For the chocolate, I purchased some knit fabric at a local fabric store...I was able to match my ceiling color exactly...yes, yes, my ceiling is chocolate brown. The store had a sale, buy 1 meter get 2 free...so for $8.00 I got 3 meters (1m = 39" for you Americans) Plenty of fabric and figuring I would have some left over for something else....NOT!!! LOL

You don't have to be particularly careful when cutting the strips, they don't have to be exact, as you can see mine above are not even, you won't even notice once they are on the rug. Then the time consuming part came...all the chocolate knots...now I did every other stitch (I kinda treated the grip mat like cross stitch material) with the chocolate...so I would work row by row...and do alternating stitches...kind of like laying bricks...hope that makes sense. I was plenty thick enough doing every other one.

At the end of 4 days of tying single knots...not sure how many, but thinking about 2000...I had sore fingers, but it was done. I got the bright idea to "bind" the edge with a long strip of the chocolate, and threaded it in a large needle and as shown in the picture, went through 3 holes all the way around...

Almost done...just trimmed the excess grip mat...now, in hindsite, I wouldn't have chosen to bind the edge as when you trim it, you end up seeing a strip of the grip mat, which I'm not thrilled about, but binding was a lot of work and I didn't want to take it all apart...so it is what it is...I think if you just leave it and trim to the last row of knotted pieces, you wouldn't see the edge at all...but, oh well, live and learn. Below is the finished rug in my little bathroom...it's perfect...I love how it turned out, even if it wasn't completely the way I intended...thats why you have to be flexible when crafting, roll with the punches...now I can rest my sore and stiff fingers...before starting my next project...the ruffled tree skirt!
Yes, us Canucks celebrate Thanksgiving earlier than you Americans...this weekend is the big turkey day for us...and our family certainly has a lot to be thankful for this year. Dave had triple by-pass this summer, and we didn't even know there was a problem...so we are thankful that he did not have a heart attack...from the time he had his stress test to surgery to recovery to home was only 15 days...which we are very thankful for...he didn't have to wait months and months for this, cause he would have kept working and who knows what could have happened. We are also thankful that he recovered so well and is doing amazing now...he is back to work and life has returned to normal again. The thing I am most thankful for is the amazing faithfulness of our Lord Jesus...I could not have done this summer without Him and He continually intervened and got us through. Thankful for our amazing friends who prayed and believed with us for DAve's complete recovery...it has been a challenging summer, but we are on the other side, and I for one, am very thankful!!!
So this is my little project. I woke up this morning staring into our master bath, thinking, why have I not covered that window...that morning light is too bright. Then in a whirlwind of a moment, it all came to me..."I could put those old shutter in the window ledge, and THEN I could hang all my jewellery on them...pretty and functional. Mhmmmmmmmm."

The shutters came from a yard sale a couple years ago, 50 cents a piece for 4 of them. Darn good price I'd say. Two I had repurposed as part of a headboard, but still had two left, just begging to be used somewhere in the house. I went a got some satin finish espresso spray paint, and went to work

Here they are all pretty and painted up

Oh yeah baby....awesome...love love love. I can see all my jewellery at once. I had hubby drill and install some small silver hooks for things like rings and bracelets and necklaces. I also made some cork pads at the bottom, covered them in fabric, and can stick all my stud earrings in them. I love this...and so quick and simple to put together
Bonus...tomorrow when I wake up the morning sunshine won't be quite as bright...and...another bonus, is even though hubby insists no one can see in that window, cause its that rippled glass, now I know for sure they can't. LOL...he just rolled his eyes at me...
Gotta love yard sales! Dh and I go every weekend, only for an hour or so, but we have so much fun and find so many cool things. This past weekend I nabbed this birdcage...it was early, and the stuff was out on the table, but the house was closed up, so I just left the moolah on the table, hope they got it.

So here is the little beauty after I stripped it of its somewhat tacky flowers...
So here we are all prettied up and sitting on my dining room table. I made a wood base for it out of some old cheese box wood I got at a guys house. It is in the basement of our 120 year old home, and the walls are uneven, painted, poured concrete...its that old adage about making lemonade...you have to work with what you have.

Below is a cute little sign that hangs by the dryer...saw it on Pinterest and knew it was perfect, and more functional than the lone socks sitting in a pile in a basket that no one goes through. Hoping the array of strays disappears once everyone sees them.

This is in the corner, dryer on one wall, then laundry tub and washer on other wall. All the pipes are exposed, so when I painted the room...I just painted them too, to at least make them less obvious. Also saw the fabric wrapped ladder on Pinterest, they did it with a flag, but I just took some excess fabric and raffia and did the same thing. Found some extra decor items and voila...I think I like it...:P

This sign I made...or rather re-made! It was a "Family" sign we bought at Hobby Lobby and got ruined in our move last year. Only the paper top of it was destroyed, not the wood it was on, so I painstakingly punched all the squares out of paint chips ( our local paint store had a whole box they were getting rid of ) took me for----ever to punch them all out. The colors were chosen for my bathroom, but then I didn't end up using it there...so it sat...until yesterday. I mod podged all the squares on, and then took a brown ink pad and inked all over the top to soften some of the colors and give it a more uniform appearance. Cut out the letters with my cricut and mod podged them on top. It works as the adjacent room is my sewing room and it is tealish in color. The bottle is just a dollar store bottle I glued twine to, and some pine cones to finish off the display. Im thinking I need some greenery along the shelf yet, but Im not sure
Thanks for stopping in today and seeing my latest projects...thats what happens when you get out of bed and go on pinterest...I decided rather than pinning more projects, I would make some of the ones I already pinned...yay, I love completed projects!!!Scrapping Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00942441570601897824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7437387456974085976.post-32313890035755886392013-08-24T12:15:00.000-07:002013-08-24T12:15:24.763-07:00My Stamp ShelfSo a couple years ago, I was beginning to accumulate quite a few wood stamps, and needed a place to store them. I was praying one day, and clearly sensed God challenging me to ask Him for it? What?? How could this be?? Certainly there are so many more things in the world God needed to do than find me a shelf for my stamps. Well, learning from experience...I decided to take Him up on the challenge and I asked Him for one. Several weeks went by and nothing...I even considered just asking a woodworking friend to build me one. Then one Saturday morning, hubby and I were out yard saleing..and we were driving up to a sale, and there is was...laying on the ground...I had no idea what it even was prior, but there lay my stamp shelf, I could hardly wait to get out of the car...It had a whopping price tag of $2, I was almost in tears...do you know what its like to have the God of all creation answer your prayer? To care that much about every detail of your life? I know now that it was not about the shelf...it was about God showing me His faithfulness, even in the small things, and it built my faith in a huge way. Everytime I glance at that shelf, hanging on the wall in my craft room, I remember that God loves me and wants to give me the desire of my heart. I attached a photo of the shelf, full of stamps, and following a spray paint and glue job to make it look new. I hope you know God wants to do the same for you...you need only to ask and believe!!!
It apparently is wood that was/is used to make cheese boxes...great little planks for projects...so we bought a bunch of them. This one I painted with some leftover cream paint, and then wiped it off before it dried...then used a little black and brown paint around the edges to achieve that old, worn look. Then I created a stencil with my cricut and sure cuts a lot, just out of cardstock, and sponged over. Once dry, I took a sanding block to it to age it some more, drilled holes (getting good at that) and made a jute hanger. It hangs on a chest on our deck we picked up at a yard sale.
Here is the chair almost as I bought it...I usually forget to take a before picture until after I have started the project...so actually hubby had already spray painted the wood flat black for me...cute chair huh???
He is recovering quite well and things have returned to normal, well, as normal as our clan can be.

My latest projects have consisted of working on my sewing room. Its just a tiny little room in my basement, adjacent to my craft area...it also doubles as extra storage, so it was a challenge to make the area aesthetically pleasing while making it easy for everyone else to find things when they need them. Also dealing with a less than attractive cement wall that is very uneven and somewhat unattractive...but since there are no plans to change that, I just worked with what I had. Below is a pic of the area emptied out before I began painting. Notice the lovely panel box too...

Good news is that I have an updated, however small window for natural light...it does look into our driveway, and so in some of the pictures you will notice our cars, but hey, thats life

Here is the first after shot...colour is a tealish aqua-ey colour...now, it did seem a bit dark at first, but one I got all my stuff back in, I was happy with the choice. Notice the small green fabric cabinet...that green is the colour of the craft room...weird combo, but it works, well, I think it does anyway. Made the ironing board cover myself, as all the pre made ones are not pretty and I wanted pretty, even had enough left over for a small valance.

Here is what I like to affectionately call my "wrapping centre"...in the middle I put some cork boards from the dollar store, to hold bows and ribbon. I covered them with fabric and staple gunned (as my husband gasps) to the wall. I have been wanting to make something for all my wrapping stuff, and who knew I had it all along, so Im quite happy with that. The chair, which you can barely see at the bottom of the picture, was a yard sale find a couple years ago...it had some damage, the veneer was cracked, but I loved the style, so hubby spraypainted it black and then I modpodged the seat and back with ads from an old Craft magazine from 1936 that I picked up at a local antique store we frequent. Another post will follow with the chair project

This is a peg board I painted, then created a stencil with my cricut and painted the "create" with the same green as the fabric cabinet. I got dowels from the dollar store (gotta love that place) and cut them to hold a spool of thread and the matching bobbin, and then glue gunned them into the pegboard...made some extra on the other side, just so all my stuff is easy to see and grab. Now the pin cushion in the tea cup is an old one that I've had forever, and just last night I made one of those cute ones from pinterest with a jelly jar and the same fabric from the cork boards...but I guess I neglected to take a shot of it.
Got some mdf letters from Hobby Lobby for 2.49 each, covered them with scrapbook paper, mod podged them, sanded them and stuck some ribbon and buttons on them. Hubby spray painted the piece of drywall the panel box was on, wires and all, just so it looks a little less obvious.
The wreath I made earlier this year from dictionary paper...it just hadn't found a home where I liked it...but I love it here. The sign I made myself...we were at a yard sale earlier this year, and this guy was selling all these wood planks for $1 each...I bought 5 or so, then hubby went back and got me like 20 more...lol...he knows me so well. I painted it roughly with some leftover paint, and tried not to cover the wood entirely. Cut some letters out with my cricut and Sure Cuts a Lot software for the quote. I even drilled the holes in the wood myself, once I figured out how to use the drill...(hubby usually does this for me, but he wasn't home) and then just ties some jute and knotted it in front to hang it up
The chest we picked up at a yard sale a month or so ago, for like $5...they wanted $10, but hubby haggled em down...I simply rolled up all my fabric and stacked them...I can see almost everything and fabric is somewhat like scrapbook paper, you can never have enough, and I love to collect it
The only thing left to do is paint the desk that my sewing machine sits on...I want it black on top with everything else an antique white...a friend suggested perhaps black is not the best choice for a sewing table as it will be hard to see...what do you all think?
How could this happen...well...I guess I haven't hung any up since we moved...but this will make her happy!!! I used various scraps of paper, some chipboard, wood letters, flowers, metal letters and a diecut to complete the project...hope you like it!
Crafting of any sort took a back seat for a while, and although I love card making, I have taken to some other crafting. The house we bought is from the 1870's, and it is a total "pinterest" house...I have had so much fun painting and doing decor projects to fill the walls. I thought I would share some of them with you...I'm really big into the upcycling right now and that has fueled many of my projects...

So this first one is a wood sign. Hubby found about 5 pieces of old old wood in the garage of the house we bought, and we both thought they would be perfect for an old sign. After searching pinterest for ideas on how to best execute my project, I came up with a plan. Started with my Sure Cuts a Lot software and designed the words, cut a mock up out of scrap paper to make sure everthing was sized right, which it wasn't, so back to square one...after getting the sizes of the fonts right, I cut the letters out of my wall pops material...love this stuff. After it was cut, I "weeded" out the letters, leaving the negative space (don't forget the centers of the letters), then I cut a piece of transfer tape to fit the mat, and carefully placed it on the negative portion...lifted it, peeled the backing off and placed it on the wood...lifted the transfer tape off, which left me with a stencil of sorts, that I smoothed down really well. Took some antique white craft paint and sponged over the stencil, as soon as I was done sponging, I removed the wall pop stencil and took it to show hubby...and he oooooohed and ahhhhhed and said all the right things (smart move) and then promptly placed it on top of our living room wall cabinet.

I love how the cracks in the wood make the paint look old and worn...I love a successful project!
This was a project I completed for our front porch...which hubby closed in and finished...looks awesome! This is a 16 x 24 canvas that I painted...had to mix some colors up to get what I wanted, a teal of sorts...anyway...then took some expresso paint and lightly brushed the edges up and then rolled with the teal roller over until it was all blended and looked aged...after that was done, I sat down with my Sure Cuts a Lot again, and designed all the words/fonts...took more time than I thought, but worth it in the end. Once all were chosen, I cut them out with my cricut out of bazzill cardstock, ran them through my xyron and carefully placed them on the dried canvas...once all were on, I mod podged over the whole thing twice, allowing to dry in between...ok, maybe I helped it with my heat gun...Here is a picture of the porch with the finished piece

Next was a set of old wood windows I was just itching to use. They had been previously painted and distressed when we still lived in our other house, but the colors worked perfect for my bathroom in the new house. Previously I had pieces of scrapbook paper in the panes with words on them, but they got damaged in the move, so I pulled that out and replaced them with cardboard inserts covered with fabrics that match my shower curtain, which I also made for our last house, but I love it, so I kept it.
Love this sign...basically just used a wood sign from the dollar store, painted it and then mod podged the scrapbook paper and wording on, and hung it on a beautiful hanger purchased from Hobby Lobby, at 50% off , of course
Wow, its been a while since I was here...crazy summer...we sold our house, then moved into a rental house...who'd thought we were so picky...still hunting for the perfect home...ahem...anyway, between the move and work, who had time to craft?? Certainly not me...and even though I am working with a limited number of supplies...I did keep out a box of my faves (thanks to my friends suggestion) so I can at least quench the need to be creative until we are in our own place and I am in my wonderful scrap room!!! Yay!!! I happened to pop into the cricut mb last night and knew once I had visited RAQ's card challenge, I had to make a card. Papers are from a new pad I bought from the Paper Studio...all kraft designs...love it...so raw and natural. Oh and yes, I am working on Christmas cards already....mostly because I plan to be decorating in the new house, and won't have time to do cards then...Scrapping Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00942441570601897824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7437387456974085976.post-66260845430741732852012-05-15T13:10:00.000-07:002012-05-15T13:11:50.382-07:00Let your Light Shine!!!

This one I made myself...no copying this time...lol...so happy with the way it turned out. This is my headboard...wanted to redo it to match the small dresser I
just finished...so basically followed the same steps as shown below in
the dresser post. Painted with Fiesta Red...two coats, waxed in spots,
and then two coats of cream, then sanded. The windows are covered in
textured fabric, that I folded over to the back for a clean edge and
then hot glued to the window, since they were already painted. The
shutters I picked up at a yard sale 4 for 2.00 last summer and have been
meaning to do something with them...so here is the finished product...
Above is the original dresser...now...I bought this at a yard sale about 6 years ago for $5.00 and the lovely stenciling on it I did after I bought it...it served its purpose for many years, but with a new color scheme in my bedroom, it needed a makeover

Tada....here is the finished product...after I sanded of course...I am so pleased with the finished product, and it looks wonderful in the bedroom...tomorrow is shopping for some fabric, and then on the old window headboard that dh did himself, but again the colors don't match, so it will receive the same treatment as this dresser. At the ends will be two old shutters I picked up at a yard sale for 1.00 to make it as long as my bed...will post when done
Above is the first page...I know its hard to see, but the small strips are major cities along the way, with the time and temperature...the paper is a Florida map that I bought while down south.
Wow, I have been so busy between work and doing all these projects I see on Pinterest. This one is a combination of two projects I saw. The background is comprised of paint chips...our local hardware was clearing out all the old chips, and so they had them free to anyone that wanted them, so I took a box full for my scrapping girls and myself...and they came at the perfect time. Click here for detailed instructions on completing the background of squares...I followed her instructions to the tee and it worked out perfectly. The pear was cut with my cricut out of swiss dot paper by Bazzil, the scripture was computer generated and the swirls are cut from Home Accents. I am very pleased with the finished result...and now, on the next Pinterest project!!!Scrapping Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00942441570601897824noreply@blogger.com0
